VOLUME - Animal Collective
by jlee | Feb 11, 2009 | 368 views | Leave a Comment
So by now, I’m sure you guys have seen the new Alien Workshop video, Mind Field. And if you haven’t you’re sleeping kid [here's our take on the premiere last week]. Among the distinct sound of Alien, with its roots with Dinosaur Jr. a new sound emerged with the Workshop, an Animal sound. A little SAT analogies for ya; Animal Collective is to Alien Workshop as Band Of Horses is to the Girl camp.
So if you recall, Jake Johnson and Jason Dill both use songs from Merriweather Post Pavilion, the new album from Animal Collective. Jake uses “My Girls” and Dill uses ?In the Flowers?. Both nice fits for their parts. A coincidence to have the video come out just as the new album comes out. Witty marketing on both sides.
Heres a little background story about the band and about the new album.
“Animal Collective is a group of four best friends who grew up playing and recording music together in Baltimore County Maryland. Why Animal? Cause it’s the only word we could think of that made any remote connection to what we thought our sound was and of course, we love our fellow animals very much. Why Collective? Cause we have always wanted to be the ones who define what and who AC is. Two people? Four people? Why not? Don’t be surprised if you come to see us and it’s not what you thought it would be, and try not to get too upset. AC continues to make music after seven years, six studio records and one live record, that combines a love of sonic free form electronic horror gospel hip hop soul pop madness and brings it all together into something that is (hopefully) at times totally pleasing and at others completely scary and confusing but most importantly is refreshing in this crazy crazy world.”
“Merriweather Post Pavilion is the ninth studio album from Animal Collective, recorded with Ben Allen in Oxford, Mississippi. After listening to this record however, it’s clear that Animal Collective have transcended the everyday realities of numbers, locations and people and arrived at a spectacular, unique place. Animal Collective have made a universal record that makes the same beautiful sense on headphones by day, or soundtracking the small hours of the morning/night, or , you suspect, stretched out in a field on your back. Whether a state of mind, or a rest stop somewhere along the way, Merriweather Post Pavilion magnificently redefines your sense of direction.”
Listen to them here:
The album cover art for Merriweather Post Pavilion. It’s trippy bro.
P.S. Here’s the list of the parts and songs from Mind Field as found on skatevideosite.com.

You probably recognize Mike Aho’s work from spot illustrations for magazines, posters for skate events and t-shirt graphics for the folks over at Volcom. But Mike is also one of our esteemed illustrators. He’s also got a new site up with some new work. Make sure to check it out at mikeahoart.com.
You can also check out his band ((sounder)).
There are also videos on his site, so make sure to check those out too.
Here are some samples.

Welcome to 1994!
Im sure everyone remembers this cover. Markovich kickflipping c-bad.
Plus he adds his own artistic skills on the cover.
Switch stance photos. Ben Horton, switch 360 flip.
He’s now at Black Box running the creative direction including Slave.
Laban with a roof ollie from his interview.
Kind of a weird interview or rather just 4 pages of Lotti photos.
Still dope regardless. The banana suit is hard to forget.
and the huge jeans!
215. i think thats stevie sitting inside the “L”.
Oyola on the opposite page. BS 180 nose grind.
Stevie, Rasool and Matt Reason.
Aight, this is probably my favorite Cardiel photo. For some reason this photo stands out, and all it is is a simple back tail on a bench. But just his style (who else can look like that when they are doing a backside tailslide?), the colors (red shirt, tan pants, green bench look just like the colors of the board) and his body position is similar to the graphic on his board. Maybe i nerded out and looked too far into it. whatever.
also, i thought Cardiel was Salman Agah for a little while, because of the board, and that i didnt read the caption. But who really read anything at age 11?
The best stage of Steve Olson. Nerdy, switch 360 flip down 8.
I wanted that board.
Alfonzo. I thought this was a droors ad not a evol.

Winter Session
by jlee | Jan 09, 2009 | 235 views | 1 Comment
I went back east for the holidays. I flew the red eye to Boston, and spent a couple days there with some friends, and then took the Fung Wah Chinatown bus to New York, where I spent a couple more days there taking in as much east coast as possible before having to come back to San Diego.
Here it is in photos.
Somewhere over Boston, about to land.
My friend Boris whos place I was crashing at and his friend Vanessa. On the train to Cupcake land…
…Where i was invited to Johnny Cupcakes Christmas party.
The basement had a full arcade, so a little wine and pacman would suffice.

Johnny himself and Boris.
Then we went to a house party somewhere mad far from Johnnys.
Homie was rocking bedazzled biggie shirt.
This is Chris. He works for Karmaloop.
He’s a really nice guy even tho he looks intimidating in photos.
This is Luke. He works for Karmaloop and Orchard skate shop. He looks like Lizard King.
And by the way, here’s Orchard.
The good homies, Matt Bagley and Broderick Gumpright.
And they got Brixton hats.
Boris among his clutter.
Jason giving Luke his first tattoo.
Chris, his lady Jackie, and bulldog Frisco.
We skated their winter TF. It was cold but fun.
Layback!
Part of the TF is a garage. Here’s Chris’ Triumph.
Custom doo-dads.
Back in new york…
LED Christmas lights are the new jawns.
Irak, wha, wha! “Live A Little Better”.
The bridge aint over.
Visited Shut. Met up with Rodney Torres, Rob Campbell [whom i havent seen in 10 years] and the youngin Julio Trinidad. Rob started a wheel company out there called Savage Urethane. Keep your eye out.
Corny but at least its telling kids to go out and play, not stay home and play video games.
Brittlee knowing that pump action.
New york quading is way different than the bros in cali with quads.
This is Sergio’s Banshee frame, soon to be some kind of ruff ryding street assaulter.
Crew!
The Footclan hideout aka The Levee.
Fun Time.
Here are some of the key foods from back home.
Jamaican beef patty. Can be obtained from most pizzerias and delis.
Seasoned ground beef in a flaky shell.
Two slices of cheese from Gino’s Pizzeria.
Fuck your BBQ chicken or Hawaiin pinapple/ham pizzas.
The recession special from Gray’s Papaya. The price has doubled!
General Tso’s chicken with pork fried rice combo from Wah Hing Kitchen.
Tyrannical delight!
Everything bagel with cream cheese from Bagel Oasis.
This one’s a bonus. Steaks from Morton’s.
Souffle too!
Random others.
This is my mom. It took forever to talk her into taking some photos.
Ducks.
Empire State.
I’ll have some new DITC next week.

The coolkids side of element.
So this little feature was written by Mark Waters who’s now over at Sole Tech. It basically explains the difference between the two kinds of ledges that are next to a set of stairs. “Jibs” being ledges that run parallel with the stairs, and “Nibs” beings ledges that run parallel with the ground. A little confusing right? Well at least the snowboarders kept that one, and we [skaters] just call them all “Hubbas”.
By the way, thats drehobl in front.
Steve Berra interview. This is slightly before his part in Tentacles Of Destruction, but when that vid came out, it made me a fan of berra. He skated to Modern English, and did a lot of fakie tricks, which I soon adapted to. I steadily had half-cab flips and fakie flips, and wished to have backside flips like him.
thats not juliet lewis.
Chany at age 17. Kinda looked like Zack Morris.
So for the longest time I thought Jose Gomez, drew all the characters on this page. And it made me think that all of Twist’s shit was Jose’s, or rather i thought Twist was Jose. And that all the new deal art was done by him and not Andy Howell. I should have just read the interview, and saw that he liked andy and twist.
Gonz nose bluntin picnic tables while people were still skating curbs. And Markovich up top.
Colin just got the cover of our latest issue [January 2009]. I believe this was his last cover before the current one. Switch crooked grind, with a burning building in the background. [December 1993]
More alien graphics i used to redraw.
How hard is this shit! Onyx ads in a skate mag. BACDAFUCUP. I guess when you got Kareem backing your shit, its gotta be legit.
I just saw the San Diego premiere of Macaframa which is a fixed gear video based on riders in SF. It was held at the Ken Club. To my pleasant surprise Cardiel had a video part, with a Julien cameo. It made the video that much better.
A spread of the Jason Adams interview.
Rodney Mullen interview. Basically talking about his duties as Rocco’s right hand man, and trying manage a park full of crazy talented kids. The World Park days. Watch The Man Who Souled The World and it will explain everything about skateboarding.
Jeremy Wray, another huge inspiration both on and off the board.
Child prodigy 1.
Child prodigy 2.
Nineteen ninety mutha fuckin two. Straight from Jersey to Philly, the blunt burns on. Yo b, tell them how this shit goin’ down!
Redman’s “Whut? Thee Album” is the first CD I ever bought. Before that was just tapes.
Another installment of the pickle.

HUF frontside noseslide in midtown ny. October 93.
Jeremy Klein. I guess its technically a backside 270 flip and a Japanese Fetish.
Before Jimmy there was Mike.
and for some reason these graphics kinda freaked me out as a kid. cant wait for alien to drop their new video.
classic.
mad brain floss.
Laban
Ed and Berra
ted
markovich
Adam McNatt interview. shot by Sherman. So dope back then.
there were these photos where hes in all green. i wish they ran bigger, but they were scaled down and scattered throughout the interview. He’s also a tommyknocker…?
Jahmal Williams, ATM Clicks, TWS photo incentive, goth city girls, and old school Cycle fill-in.
bottom of the page. Danny Way noseslides the banks 9. i think he did it for 50 or 100 bucks? hes doing way harder shit than that now. p.s. Harold rocking a NJ Devils jersey on top of the stairs…
My favorite cartoon in TWS. I looked at my kitchen differently after this.

Mike Carroll interviewed by Sheffey. I really wanted that playboy bunny deck too.
Click to read.
Donger.
Kanten
Duane Pitre. Crowd pleaser.
By the way, this was my first board. Planet Earth, Jason Carney.
I had no idea who Carney was at the time, and what Planet Earth was, but i think i picked it based on liking the illustration. I also had Thunders, 39mm wheels and the cheapest bearings the skate shop had.
